Speaker: Dr. Daniel Jeans (KEK)

The ILC is a planned electron-positron collider, which in its first stage will
operate as a Higgs boson factory. I will discuss the physics potential of the
ILC, with an emphasis on Higgs studies. The associated detector design
studies will also be covered, with particular emphasis on the highly granular
calorimeters being designed to optimally apply particle-flow techniques to
event reconstruction. The Japanese government has recently expressed an
interest in hosting the ILC: I will discuss this and other aspects of the project's
political situation.
