I am not in a hurry about this. I imagine most initial work on data will be done on site anyhow and access to the DB from Italy wan't be needed before next year at earliest. I am glad that accessing the FNAL server from offsite seem to work well, on the other hand most queries may be for little data and maybe happen kind of often, FNAL<->Italy bandwidth may be good, but latency (ping RTT time e.g.) is 3 times what it is for Texas Tech and now way to improve. The ping time for Fnal to Texas Tech is actually better then UCLA or Lbl, I woud'nt call it a place with poor connectivity. I still think in the long term we would be better off with "some" replica in Italy, and then even in a "only replicate what you need" scheme it may be better to have only one such replica. We may talk more about this when Mark's procedure gets closer to being implemented, or our need is such that we find someone in Italy weilling to work on it.
